Vaping Research & Surveillance

Google search shows sharp increase in  vaping , sharp decline for  electronic cigarette  (thanks to Clive Bates for exposing)

NIH/NIDA funded 2013 Moffitt Cancer Center online survey of 1815 adult vapers (who had a history of daily cigarette smoking, and had smoked for at least a year) finds:

  • 79% had completely quit smoking cigarettes
  • 1% smoked last cigarette >5 years ago
  • 23% smoked last cigarette 1-5 years ago
  • 20% smoked last cigarette 6-12 months ago
  • 34% smoked last cigarette 1-6 months ago
  • 95% were daily vapers
  • 29% vaped >20 times per day
  • 40% vaped 10-20 times per day
  • 30% vaped 1-10 times per day
  • 83% vaped non tobacco flavorings
  • 17% vaped tobacco flavoring

Gender Differences in use and expediencies of e-cigarette users: Online survey results

BUT the study s authors failed to mention any of these findings (buried in Table 2) that disprove many false claims by DHHS and its funding recipients since 2009 about vaping.

Moffitt Cancer Center began this online survey of vapers in August 2013 moffitt.org/newsroom/press-release-archive/2013/moffitt-cancer-center-researchers-want-to-talk-to-e-cigarette-users/

and in 2015 announced receipt of $3.6 million from NIH to conduct the study.

New meta-analysis of 26 studies (worldwide) finds:

cigarette smoking increases probability of vaping exponentially

  • current smokers were nearly 15 times more likely to currently vape
  • teen smokers were 5 times more likely to vape than adult smokers (39% v 7.5%)
  • current smokers were 16 times more likely to ever use an e-cigarette, and
  • ever smokers were 9.5 times more likely than never smokers to ever use an e-cigarette

Study funded by anti-THR Hong Kong Council on Smoking and Health finds current smokers in Hong Kong (where nicotine vapor product sales are banned, and where vaping is banned everywhere smoking is banned) were 11.8 times more likely than never smokers to ever use an e-cig, while former smokers were 4.3 time more likely to do so; But authors claim these findings are  of concern  and conclude that anti-vaping interventions should target cigarette smokers (to prevent them from switching to vaping).

Ohio poll confirms War on Vaping by Obama s DHHS and Big Pharma shills working, and that overwhelming majority of e-cig  ever users  are smokers or ex-smokers, finds:

  • just 34% correctly knew that  e-cigarettes are safer to use than tobacco cigarettes
  • 62% agreed FDA should regulate e-cigs (but weren t told FDA is banning e-cigs)
  • 55% agreed e-cigs should be taxed at similar rate as cigarettes (but weren t told risks)
  • those knowing e-cigs are safer than smoking are less likely to support FDA regs & taxes
  • 24% ever used an e-cigarette
  • 71% of e-cig  ever users  are current smokers
  • 25% of e-cig  ever users  are former smokers
  • 8% of e-cig  ever users  are never smokers

Univ of Cincinnati pollsters tout misleading push poll findings to news media to lobby for FDA e-cig deeming ban and taxing e-cigs, falsely claim  The relationship between tobacco use and e-cigarette use remains unclear, as does whether one of those activities leads to the other , bury data that very few never smokers ever vaped on last sentence.

NIH funded Cornell study of 1200 adult smokers finds taxing, limiting flavorings and requiring warnings on nicotine vapor products would discourage cigarette smokers from switching to vaping (which is why vaping opponents have been lobbying for those and other anti vaping laws); But Cornell news headline misrepresents study s findings. onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/add.13257/abstract

The Fulcrum   Up in smoke: As the e-cigarette debate in Ontario heats up, is the whole point of smoking cessation being lost in the shuffle?

Ken Warner correctly says  If we could take every cigarette smoker today and get all of them onto vaping and off cigarettes, the public health benefit would be gigantic,  but criticizes others who have said the same thing as  probably a little hysterical .

In contrast, Seattle Children s Hospital s Leslie Walker falsely claims e-cigs are addicting nonsmoking teens, are gateways to cigarette smoking, are not being used by teens to quit smoking, and that there is no evidence vaping is safer than smoking.

Article in lung cancer journal points out that vapor products:

  • emit no tar, and <1% of nitrosamines of tobacco smoke
  • emit <10% of aldehydes in tobacco smoke
  • are >20 times less dangerous than cigarettes

should be used by cancer patients to quit or reduce smoking if/when patients fail to quit smoking using recommended medical procedures and smoking cessation drugs www.lungcancerjournal.info/article/S0169-5002%2815%2930123-9/pdf

FDA Deeming Ban

US Rep. Ken Buck introduces bill (HR 4371) that would prevent FDA from enforcing February 15, 2007 grandfather date on newly deemed vapor and tobacco products

Obama s DHHS Intensifies War on Vaping, Lobbies for FDA Deeming Ban

CDC Director Tom Frieden falsely claims e-cigarettes can only improve the health of smokers if they completely quit smoking, falsely claims CDC ads featuring Kristy (which demonize e-cigarettes, see below) have proven effective at reducing smoking, and falsely insinuates yet again that all e-cigarettes used by teens are tobacco products (even after the 2015 MTF survey found <20% of teen e-cig users vaped nicotine).

CDC touts new anti vaping ads that falsely insinuate smokefree vaping is smoking, caused a woman s lung to collapse (which was almost certainly caused by cigarette smoking), isn t less harmful than smoking, and doesn t help smokers quit smoking.

In April 2014, CDC offered $2,500 to smokers who began using e-cigarettes or smokeless tobacco to reduce their cigarette consumption (but not to quit smoking), and then were diagnosed with a serious disease, to tell their story in CDC propaganda videos.

In March 2015, CDC held a press conference to announce their new ads, invited Kristy to speak at the press conference, and revealed a print ad featuring Kristy saying  I started using e-cigarettes but kept smoking. Right up until my lung collapsed.  www.cdc.gov/tobacco/campaign/tips/resources/ads/tips-4-ad-kristy-full.pdf

Addictive Behaviors publishes anti-THR op/ed by NCI bureaucrats who claim the negligible risks of e-cigs and smokeless tobacco and the low risks of OTP should only be compared to  no tobacco use , and should not compared to the huge risks of cigarettes (which has been NCI policy for the past several decades to deceive the public and policy makers to believe smokeless tobacco, e-cigarettes and OTP are as harmful as cigarettes).

FDA requests more information on psychosocial predictors of uptake of tobacco and other products (even though parental and older sibling smoking has been the leading predictor of teen smoking for many decades as tobacco controllers keep blaming tobacco companies, advertising, retail displays, movies, flavorings, and vaping for teen smoking, which has declined to records since 2010 due largely to vapor products) www.federalregister.gov/articles/2016/01/19/2016-00836/request-for-information-on-psychosocial-predictors-of-uptake-of-tobacco-and-other-products
